What is Building Futures in Alberta?
Preparing your students for the future is easier than ever.
The Learning Framework is a key part of the Building Futures in Alberta program. It provides a reference tool for teachers on important financial education themes and topics, along with target areas of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviours. This constitutes the suggestions for WHAT to teach to help improve financial literacy
For each topic, Alberta educators have identified targets in the Alberta curriculum where instruction could address the target areas of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviours. This suggested “Learning Map” outlines WHERE instruction can be added.
Lastly, teacher materials are provided to help support teacher instruction. Covering the identified content in target curriculum areas will compound student understanding. This covers HOW to teach the financial literacy material.
Teachers can request an Ambassador - that is, a representative from the financial industry who can assist with their financial education efforts.
Over time, more and more programs and resources will be integrated into the Building Futures in Alberta program to provide ever-expanding support to teachers and their efforts to improve the financial literacy of Alberta youth.
If you have ideas or suggestions for the program, feedback on your experience with any program component, or would like to request an Ambassador, don't hesitate to contact us.
We welcome your ideas and feedback to help Building Futures in Alberta grow!
The Building Futures in Alberta program is a financial literacy teaching support and framework. It is built in partnership with Alberta Education.
BFIA was built through the passion, knowledge, and experience of decades of educators across Canada. The Canadian Foundation for Economic Education (CFEE)'s 50 years of free financial education programs and resources are now available in one place and directly correlated to the Alberta Education curriculum.
BFIA’s goal is to support financial education in Alberta by providing teachers with free access to resources and programs to improve the financial literacy of Alberta youth.
The program provides free access to a wide array of resources from the Canadian Foundation for Economic Education, all available in English and French.

Our Vision
Every Canadian has the capability and opportunity to build a successful economic future
The Canadian Foundation for Economic Education (CFEE) is a non-profit, non-partisan organization, founded in 1974, that works to improve economic, financial, and enterprising capability. CFEE works collaboratively with our funding partners, departments of education, school boards, schools, educators, teacher associations, colleges and universities, immigrant serving agencies, and seniors’ organizations to develop and provide free, non-commercial programs and resources for teachers and students – developed and reviewed by educators. CFEE also has a range of programs to assist newcomers to Canada as they look to settle and integrate into their new country.
CFEE also works internationally with organizations such as the OECD in Paris and the Association of Asia Pacific Countries (APEC). Overall, CFEE’s work focuses on helping people of all ages, including seniors and older adults, to be better prepared to undertake their economic roles, responsibilities, and decisions with confidence and competence. Extensive research in recent years has clearly indicated a strong correlation between financial health and mental health and CFEE aims to help Canadians stay in control of their financial affairs so as to avoid experiencing the financial stress and anxiety that can impact mental health.
